There is a certain fish, which we call a manatee, or sea cow; the Indigenous peoples call them “iguaragua” and are frequently seen in the Captaincy waters of Espirito Santo and in other locations to the north, where colder temperatures are not so severe. It is a water creature of immense size that feeds on vegetation as can be found grazing on grasses caught in the rocks, bathed by mangroves. The sea cow can exceed an ox in body-weight. It is covered with a hard skin, resembling the color of an elephant; females have breasts

between her two arms, with which she suckles her offspring while she swims. The sea cows’ mouth is very similar to the mouth found on a cow or ox.

Hay un pez, al que llamamos buey de mar, los Indios lo llaman iguaragua, frecuente en la Capitanía de Espirito Santo y en otros lugares del norte, donde el frío o no es tan fuerte, o es algo muy pequeño y menos que entre nosotros; es este pez de inmenso tamaño; se alimenta de hierbas como lo indican los céspedes masticados atrapados en rocas bañadas por manglares. Supera al buey en corpulencia; está cubierto de una piel dura, de color parecido al de un elefante; tiene junto a los pechos unos como dos brazos, con los que nada, y debajo de ellos tetas con las que amamanta a los propios hijos, tiene la boca completamente similar a la del buey
